At what cost?

317 billion tonnes/km transported in France in 1997

Nearly 100 billion tonnes/year are transported by vehicles of French goods,
over a total of 238 transported on the routes of France,

that means ¾ of land transport.

In 25 years the tonnes/kms transported have more than doubled; the roads are saturated.

I deteriorate the motorways to the same extend as 30,000 cars

The external costs to the infrastructure from motorway traffic are largely subsized by the drivers (fuel taxes, vehicle taxes, tolls etc…)C. Meisterman, Cie Francais de Navigation Rhenane
Waterways generate 4 times less external social costs than rail and
19 times less
than roads. (EC DGVII Transport 26/6/97)
